Clyde E. Snively, 39, efficiency engineer, died attempting to save William C. Howell, 13, from drowning, Taylorsville, Indiana, June 24, 1944. William grasped a rope that was tied to a tree on the bank of the Flatrock River and swung over the water. At a point 14 feet from the bank he fell into water 15 feet deep and swam dog fashion but made no progress toward the bank. Snively, almost fully clothed, waded five feet from the bank and then to William, took hold of his shirt, and swam and towed him two feet toward the bank. Both then were submerged, William holding Snively around the waist . Snively rose alone, trod water several minutes in distress, and then sank. Both were drowned. 40267-3386
