Clyde John Aketachunak died attempting to save Jennifer Prince from drowning, Kotlik, Alaska, July 14, 1993. Jennifer, 6, was wading in the Kotlik Slough of the Yukon River’s Apoon Pass when she got into deeper water and began to struggle. Aketachunak, 27, fisherman, and a friend were on the bank in the vicinity and became aware of the situation. While the friend left for help, Aketachunak ran to the slough and, although he was recovering from a recently broken collarbone, entered the water and swum toward Jennifer. Jennifer submerged; Aketachunak went below the surface of the water near her and did not resurface. Others arrived and removed them from the slough, but neither could be revived. 68023-7828
