Clyde R. Terry, 38, president of military school, attempted to save J. Kenneth Lum, 8, from burning, Aledo, Illinois, January 10, 1927. Kenneth was alone in a room on the second floor of a house when the house took fire. After the fire chief had ordered his men not to enter the room by way of a ladder, Terry climbed the ladder to a window and entered the room. Dense smoke and some steam were in the room, and the walls and ceiling were burning. Terry felt over several cots and finally found Kenneth on the floor. Grasping Kenneth, he crawled a few feet toward the window, and, feeling himself becoming weak, he tried to throw Kenneth out of the window. Terry then became unconscious. He was rescued by a man who entered the room through the window and dragged him to the window. Later a fireman reached inside at the window and got Kenneth. Kenneth could not be revived. Terry was seriously burned. He recovered. 26987-2400
