Clyde W. May, 50, marine engineer, died attempting to save Dorothy C. Austin, 8, from drowning, Seaside, Oregon, August 16, 1922. (See case pf SIDNEY W. HOFFMAN.) About the time Hoffman started toward Dorothy, May started toward her from wadable water within 50 or 60 feet of her. He did not reach Dorothy but was also carried to a point more than 250 feet from shore. The lifeguard who reached Hoffman also got hold of May, but he lost his hold of May and was drawn away from him as those on shore continued to pull on the line. May was drowned. 23770-1881
