Columbus White, Jr., rescued Antonio G. Castelo from burning, Santa Clara, California, September 10, 1986. Castelo, 54, lay in the fiberglass cab of an overturned and burning utility cart after a highway accident. Working nearby, White, 53, laborer, ran to the cart, and, despite flames feeding on it and intense heat, he extended himself partially through one of the cart’s windows, grasped Castelo under the arms, and pulled him out. He dragged Castelo away from the cart as it was quickly engulfed in flames. Castelo was hospitalized for second-degree burns and other injuries.
