Cory J. Neufeld helped to save Patricia L. L. Donohoe from drowning, Lockport, Manitoba, June 17, 1990. Patricia, 12, and her cousin, Neufeld, 19, steamfitter, were fishing in wadable water of the Red River near the St. Andrews Lock and Dam when Patricia lost her footing and was carried toward an open lock of the dam by a back-current. Neufeld immediately swam to her and, grasping her, attempted to push her to safety, but the strong current thwarted his efforts and he himself was carried closer to the dam. They shouted for help. Two fishermen in a small motorboat saw their plight and took their boat to them. Patricia and Neufeld held onto the sides of the boat, which then took them to wadable water and safety.
