Craig Irwin Cronin attempted to save Carla Scott from assault, College Park, Maryland, September 29, 1987. Miss Scott was at work in a motel office when a man entered the motel and threatened her with a container of gasoline. Her co-worker, Cronin, 38, guest service agent, positioned himself between the man and Miss Scott and attempted to prevent the man from reaching her. Cronin followed and helped to put out the flames on her. He then noticed flames on himself and extinguished them. Miss Scott was hospitalized 10 days for second- and third-degree burns to 15 percent of her body. Cronin was hospitalized three weeks for second- and third- degree burns to his face, neck, ears, chest, and hands.
