Craig T. Carrier saved Gary D. Eigenbrod from drowning, Henry, Illinois, October 7, 1971. Gary, 2, fell into a concrete lined cesspool 20 feet deep in which there was 15 feet of liquid waste matter. Craig, 17, high school student, lowered a ladder into the cesspool and descended it, holding his breath as he submerged himself in the liquid waste. After twice being forced to climb back to the surface for air, he located Gary on the bottom of the cesspool. Craig climbed to the top of the waste matter with Gary and handed him to another youth reaching through the ground-level opening. Choking on the foul air he had been forced to inhale, Craig emerged from the cesspool. Gary was revived and removed to a hospital but died the next day of pneumonia.
