Craig Wrolsen attempted to save Daniel J. Kelly from drowning, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida, March 24, 1988. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Kelly, 21, was caught in a very strong undertow and pulled seaward. He called for help, attracting the attention of Wrolsen, 33, an out-of-state police officer who was on vacation. As Wrolsen waded and swam toward Kelly, a man equipped with a surfboard reached Kelly and took him to shore. Attempting then to return to shore, Wrolsen too was caught in the undertow and was carried seaward. Another man entered the water and took Wrolsen toward shore; when they were near the beach, the surfer aided them the remaining distance. Both Kelly and Wrolsen were exhausted and required hospital treatment, but they recovered.
