Dale Samuel Welsch rescued four children from a runaway automobile, Wexford, Pennsylvania, May 25, 1991. Four girls, ages 1 through 6, were in a car that was parked in the lot of a shopping center, just off a heavily traveled highway. The car began to drift backward across the lot, which sloped down to the highway. Welsch, 36, contractor, was at a service station nearby when he saw the situation. He immediately ran after the car, reaching it just as it started onto the highway. Welsch opened the driver’s door, swung his body partially inside the car, then placed his right foot on the brake, taking the car to a stop in the middle of the highway. Welsch sustained a minor injury to his left foot, as his leg had been wedged between the car and its door, and he recovered.
