Dan Duncan McDonald died attempting to save James C. McDonald from suffocation, Port Hood, Nova Scotia, July 4, 1922. James, 16, laborer, alone went down the ladder in the shaft of an abandoned coal mine and later, when called, made no response. Dan Duncan McDonald, 46, teamster, went to the shaft in response to a call for help, and he asked a man to go into the shaft. The man emphatically refused, and he warned McDonald against going into it. McDonald descended a ladder into the shaft, followed by James’s father. They had not gone much more than 15 feet into the shaft when they were overcome by black-damp and fell from the ladder. After air had been pumped into the shaft for more than an hour, James, his father, and McDonald were removed from the shaft. All were dead. 24949-1988
