Daniel E. De Marco saved Diane C. Harold from burning, Tampa, Florida, July 23, 1991. Mrs. Harold, 29, was the driver of a delivery truck that turned onto its passenger side and caught fire in an accident on an interstate highway. She attempted to flee the truck through its driver’s door. Having been driving behind her, De Marco, 39, service technician, saw the accident and stopped at the scene. He ran to the then-exposed underside of the burning truck and held open its driver’s door with one hand as he reached inside with the other and aided Mrs. Harold to climb out. She dropped to the pavement and walked away, moments before the truck was engulfed inflames. Mrs. Harold required hospital treatment for an injured knee, and DeMarco was treated for first- and second-degree burns to his right hand and forearm.
