Daniel F. Allen attempted to save William F. Wolters from suffocation, Olean, New York, August 21, 1911. Allen, 26, city electrician and fireman, descended a ladder to the bottom of a cistern 14 feet deep, to the assistance of Wolters, 33, and a boy who had been overcome by carbonic acid gas. Picking up Wolters, he ascended the ladder a few feet, but, finding he was being weakened by the gas, he returned to the bottom and dropped Wolters. Allen was able to ascend and, after reaching the surface, recovered. Wolters and the boy were gotten out later and revived.. 7309-569
