Daniel G. Shannon helped to save two girls from drowning, Madeira Beach, Florida, August 7, 1988. Two girls, about 5 and 7, were drawn by a longshore current in the Gulf of Mexico into the swift, incoming tidal current of John’s Pass. Fishing from a jetty at the scene, Shannon, 37, ship’s captain, immediately dived into the pass, swam about 45 feet to the girls, and grasped the younger girl just as she submerged. As the older girl clung to him, Shannon swam across the swift current back to the jetty, where others had formed a human chain to help them ashore. Shannon required treatment for barnacle cuts, and he recovered.
