Daniel J. Casley, 33, mechanic, saved Albert G. Brose, 34, farmer, from suffocation, Ryder, North Dakota, December 16, 1910. Brose was overcome by dynamite smoke in a well 25 feet deep. After other men had refused to enter the well, Casley had himself lowered on a rope. The well was but 18 inches in diameter, and he had to throw his shoulders forward in order to enter it. Brose was wedged at the bottom, and Casley could not raise his head. Feeling the need of fresh air, he had himself hoisted to the surface. Others again refused to enter the well, and Casley had himself lowered a second time. With considerable difficulty, he raised Brose’s head and worked a noose around his neck. Casley was then hoisted to the surface. Brose was carefully drawn up and revived. 6142-812
