Daniel J. Doherty saved Katherine M. Trainor and J. Henry Rooney from drowning, Woburn, Massachusetts, August 10, 1913. A canoe containing Katherine and Henry, both 16, upset, and they became distressed in deep water 30 feet from the bank of Horn Pond. Neither of them could swim. The canoe got away from them, and they grasped each other frantically and went beneath the surface several times. Doherty, 20, stenographer, rowed hard toward them from a point 500 feet distant. He dived to save time when his boat was 12 feet from those in the water, and a man in the boat, who could not swim, was unable to aid him because an oar was lost when Doherty dived. Doherty grasped Katherine, and Henry grasped Doherty at his breast. All three went beneath the surface. When they came up, Doherty pushed Henry’s hand away, and Katherine clasped Doherty around the neck with both arms. With great difficulty Doherty swam to the bank holding Katherine, and Henry held to him and was taken along. SILVER MEDAL 11577-1187
