Daniel J. Fortin helped to save Marcel H. St. Jean from drowning, Kiosk, Ontario, December 15, 1971. When he tried to walk across the Amable du Pond River on thin ice, Marcel, 8, broke through into deep water 50 feet from the bank. Among those attracted was Daniel, 17, who started to Marcel’s aid. The ice broke under Daniel, and he was submerged briefly. Breaking the ice ahead of him, he swam to Marcel and supported him at the surface. When, with Marcel, Daniel tried to climb onto the ice, it broke off. Others used a boat to remove Marcel and Daniel to the bank. Both recovered from effects of the cold water.
