Daniel Jenkins died after attempting to save a girl from drowning, Panama City Beach, Florida, June 7, 1994. While swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, a 17-year-old girl was caught in a strong undertow and carried farther from shore. She yelled for help, attracting the attention of Jenkins, 23, waiter and beach service employee, who was on the beach. Jenkins immediately ran into the water and swam to the girl, but they became separated. Others entered the water and aided the girl to safety; she required hospital treatment. Jenkins was recovered from the water shortly but could not be revived.
