Daniel M. Dickerson helped to rescue Rebecca M. Walmsley from burning, Nemaha, Iowa, August 1, 1997. Rebecca, 11, was trapped in the basement of a house after a massive explosion of propane that had leaked in the house. The house was reduced to a pile of rubble that then began to burn quickly. Dickerson, 40, house painter, who lived nearby, immediately responded to the scene, where he heard screaming. He stepped onto the remains of the house, as had another man who then pulled Rebecca from the burning basement through a hole in the rubble. Dickerson stepped over to Rebecca and, as flames grew on the rubble, picked her up and removed her to safety. The other man similarly rescued a second girl who had survived the fire, which killed two. Rebecca required hospitalization for serious burns. Dickerson was treated at the hospital for first- and second-degree burns to the left side of his body; he recovered.
