Daniel M. Long saved D. John Allen from drowning, Boston, Massachusetts, October 24, 1930. Allen, 32, deliveryman, fell from a bridge into the Charles River at a point 800 feet from the bank. It was dark and raining heavily. He failed to get hold of a life preserver that was thrown to him, and Long, 25, mail carrier, took off his coat and shoes and jumped from the bridge 18 feet down to the water close to Allen. Allen tried to grab Long, but Long grasped Allen by the throat and quieted him. He then supported Allen for 10 minutes until a rowboat reached them. Firemen arrived and lowered a ladder into the water, and Allen, who was unconscious, was raised on a rope. Long was almost exhausted but was able to ascend the ladder. Allen recovered.
