Daniel O. Cribbs attempted to save Joseph Gilg from drowning, New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, December 23, 1919. Joseph, 12, schoolboy, broke through thin ice on Red Bank Creek about 130 feet from the bank, where the water was 10 feet deep. Cribbs, 36, glass worker, ran onto the ice and walked nine feet over thin ice to a point 10 feet from Joseph and then broke through. He sank, rose, and threshed, trying to grasp ice at the edge of the hole, but the ice continued to break. Cribbs attempted to break the ice between him and Joseph, but he suddenly got cramp in his limbs, lost control of himself, and floundered helplessly. Several men then arrived, and one of them, with a rope tied around him, broke through the ice near Cribbs and reached him as he was sinking. Cribbs took hold of him, and the two men were drawn upon solid ice. Cribbs was unconscious but was revived. Joseph was drowned. 20261-1737
