Daniel R. Corey saved Darren M. Graves from drowning, Irvine, Kentucky, May 14, 1983. After a boating accident, Darren, 11, was being carried away by a strong current in the swollen Kentucky River. Fishing nearby, Corey, 25, factory worker, saw that Darren was approaching a tree about 10 feet from the bank. Despite being a non-swimmer, Corey dived in the water, maneuvered to the tree, and grasped one of its limbs. Darren floated close enough to the tree that Corey was able to grab him with one hand while maintaining his hold on the tree with the other. Corey then pushed off the tree and, kicking and stroking with one arm, returned to the bank, pulling Darren with him.
