Daniel Vunovich, 38, cupola foreman, saved Amidi Castelli, 22, cupola charger, from suffocation, Midland, Pennsylvania, January 19, 1916. Castelli fell into a cupola that had just been recharged. Fire had been burning in it 30 minutes, and it was filled with smoke and contained carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Vunovich entered the cupola through an opening in the side and descended a ladder 12 feet to the top of the charge. He groped for Castelli but failed to find him. He was unable to breathe and climbed the ladder for air. Although warned that he might lose his life, Vunovich descended the ladder again. Castelli then grasped Vunovich around the neck and got on his back, and Vunovich climbed the ladder with Castelli. Castelli was semi-conscious but recovered. 19159-1466
