Darren Michael Best saved Linda M. and Gregory J. Herbert from burning, Hayden, Idaho, March 13, 1992. Mrs. Herbert, 46, and her son Gregory, 13,were trapped inside a pickup truck that had turned onto its passenger side and broke into flame during a highway accident. Best, 25, sawmill worker, approached the scene in his own vehicle shortly after the accident and saw Mrs. Herbert attempting to climb out of the pickup. He ran to the pickup and forced its windshield loose, then removed it. Despite intense flames issuing from the underside of the pickup, Best reached inside the cab, grasped Mrs. Herbert, and helped her out. Then seeing Gregory for the first time, Best knelt inside the cab, which was beginning to burn, and removed Gregory after first freeing his leg. Best helped Gregory walk away from the pickup, which was shortly engulfed in flame. Both Mrs. Herbert and Gregory required hospital treatment for injuries sustained in the accident.
