David A. Cadwalader died attempting to save LeRoy D. Winters from suffocation, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, October 17, 1917. An explosion of fire-damp occurred in a mine in which the men were working, and they and others hurried from the face of a tunnel to seek safety. Upon reaching a gangway at the mouth of the tunnel, Winters, 35, laborer, turned in a direction leading to greater danger, while the other men turned in the opposite direction and reached good air in an entry, after having run about 140 feet. All were in darkness. When Winters was missed, Cadwalader, 32, laborer, said he would return for him. He and another man returned to the gangway and entered it. After going about 10 feet, Cadwalader said he could go no farther. His companion proceeded, thinking that Cadwalader had returned to safety. Cadwalader fell and was suffocated. 18450-1392
