David Alan White saved Erich P. and Elias A. Hoffmann from burning, Tacoma, Washington, January 28, 1993. After fire broke out in a bedroom of their family’s one-story house, Erich, 3, and his brother Elias, 2, were attempting to escape with their mother. They crawled from the boys’ bedroom past the burning room and toward the living room. White, 40, a neighbor, saw smoke and flame issuing from the house and ran to the scene. Hearing moaning from inside the house, he dropped to his hands and knees and crawled through the smoke-filled living room to where he found the boys and their mother, who were then lying on the floor. He picked the boys up and, holding one in each arm, went back through the living room and exited the house, the boys’ mother following. Elias sustained a burn to one leg, and he recovered. White was given oxygen at the scene but was otherwise uninjured.
