David Andrew Talbot saved Brian S. Marcino from burning, Thunder Bay, Ontario, July 2, 1993. Following a highway accident at night, Marcino, 43, was unconscious in his inverted and burning pickup truck. One of the first approaching motorists, Talbot, 24, carpenter, stopped at the scene and ran to the truck when he learned that it was occupied. Although flames issued from the front and exposed underside of the truck, Talbot extended his upper body through the window of the driver’s door into the cab, which also was burning. Talbot’s shirt caught fire while he attempted to free Marcino from his seat belt. He withdrew from the vehicle to roll on the ground and remove the shirt, then he approached the truck again and re-entered through the window. He released Marcino’s seat belt, then grasped Marcino by the arm and pulled him headfirst through the window, at which point he was aided by his stepmother in moving Marcino away from the truck. Very shortly, an explosion occurred at the truck. Marcino required hospitaliza- tion for treatment of his injuries. Talbot was hospitalized several days for treatment of burns to his face, back, shoulder, leg, and forearm. He recovered.
