David C, Ekstrand, 33, printer, rescued Loren E. Reif, 49, farmer, from an attack by a bull, Danville, Iowa, January 15, 1969. While in a cow corral, Reif was injured severely when a bull which had leaped over a connecting fence knocked him to the ground and butted him against a concrete watering trough. Ekstrand was driving by and noted the situation. He climbed into the corral with a board and made his way over the ice-covered ground to where the bull was butting Reif violently. Using the board, Ekstrand struck the bull on the snout and head but without affect. He then climbed back out of the corral to seek other means of distracting the bull. Failing to do so, Ekstrand reentered the corral and moved to Reif as the bull continued butting him. Ekstrand took hold of Reif and drew him to his feet. The bull made no further charge as Ekstrand aided Reif from the corral by way of its gate. Reif, who had sustained extensive injuries, recovered after hospitalization.
