David D. Gogg rescued Winfield J. Hartman from burning, Kingston, New York, December 8, 1995. Hartman, 78, was in the living room of his house when fire broke out in that room and spread. Neighbors, including Gogg, 37, truck driver, responded to the scene. Learning that Hartman was still inside the burning house, Gogg entered through the front door and called to Hartman, who responded from the living room. Despite intense heat, dense smoke which precluded visibility, and flames breaking through the windows into the enclosed front porch, Gogg crawled across the living room, guided by the sound of Hartman’s voice. He grasped Hartman, then crawled backward, pulling Hartman with him, to the front door. Others took both Gogg and Hartman onto the front porch and from there to safety. Hartman received hospital treatment for smoke inhalation and burns, and Gogg was given oxygen at the scene for having inhaled smoke. They recovered.
