David Flowers attempted to save Willie Funchess from suffocation, Cocoa, Florida, February 22, 1979. While on a ladder in a sewer manhole containing hydrogen sulfide and methane, Funchess, 21, lost consciousness and fell to the bottom of the manhole. Flowers, 45, laborer, entered the manhole and tried to remove Funchess but also lost consciousness, as did two other workmen. Another man gave assistance, and rescue personnel removed the four unconscious men. Funchess and another man were dead; a third man was revived; Flowers required hospitalization.
