David G. Coupland died attempting to save Grover B. Cleveland from drowning, Wabowden, Manitoba, July 1, 1972. When his canoe capsized and he was caught in the swift current of an outlet channel of Setting Lake, Cleveland, 37, called for help. Coupland, 24, miner, jumped from a boat nearby and swam in pursuit of Cleveland. Both were carried through two areas of rapids, where rocks projected above the surface of the water. When they emerged, Coupland still had not succeeded in overtaking Cleveland, who was inert and floating face down. Coupland then disappeared from sight. Others brought Cleveland to the bank, but he could not be revived. The body of Coupland later was recovered some distance from the scene.
