David H. McClain helped to rescue Clarence W. Christy and G. Paul McDowell from a cave-in, Brackenridge, Pennsylvania, January 1, 1913. Christy, 23, and McDowell, 37, were working in a 12-foot-deep ditch when a portion of its side caved in. Christy was completely buried by sand, and McDowell was covered to his neck. After another man entered the ditch and began to uncover Christy’s head, McClain, 44, laborer, also entered and began to dig the men out. Despite cracks in and near the ditch, which threatened to collapse further, McClain and the other man worked to free Christy, who was released 40 minutes after the accident. McClain and his companion then dug the sand from around McDowell, who was released 20 minutes later. 10266-900
