David Louis Breed, Sr., rescued Anthony L. Pena from burning, Waxahachie, Texas, September 2, 1994. Anthony, 2, and his brother, 4, were in their family’s mobile home after fire erupted in its living room and began to spread quickly. Breed, 30, maintenance man employed at the mobile home park, responded to the scene, where he learned that the boys were still inside. Breed broke out a window in the mobile home’s den, then climbed inside, finding intense heat and dense smoke that precluded visibility. Guided by the sound of the boys’ screams, Breed crawled to them. Brushing against Anthony, he picked the boy up and took him to safety outside the window, then made repeated attempts, as did others, to locate Anthony’s brother. Anthony was hospitalized for treatment of severe burns, and Breed also required hospital treatment, for second-degree burns to his chest and shoulder. Anthony’s brother died in the fire.
