David M. Prince, Jr., 24, salesman, died attempting to save T. Jefferson Merritt, 12, schoolboy, from drowning, Goldsboro, North Carolina, July 26, 1919. Jefferson waded and swam along a road submerged by the floodwaters of the Little River. He stepped off the road and was carried by the current to a point in a cornfield 40 feet from the road, where the water was seven feet deep. He took hold of a thick cornstalk and called for help. Prince waded along the road to a point nearly opposite Jefferson, swam to him, and took hold of him. Jefferson put his hands on Prince’s shoulder, and Prince immediately went under the surface. Jefferson’s head went slightly under the surface. They became separated, and Prince was seen at the surface four feet from Jefferson. Prince then sank suddenly and was drowned. Jefferson was rescued by others. 19846-1570
