David Michael Saunders helped to save a woman from assault, Brady, Nebraska, July 31, 1993. Attending a community festival in a park, a 50-year-old woman was talking to a friend when the woman’s estranged husband approached them. The husband produced a gun from his boot, struck the woman, then aimed the gun at her. Attending the same event, Saunders, 30, construction foreman, had seen the assault commence from about 50 feet away. As soon as he saw the gun, Saunders ran to the assailant and, approaching from behind, grasped the assailant’s gun hand with one hand and his waist with the other. The gun discharged, the bullet striking a child in the ankle. Saunders took the assailant to the ground and was joined immediately by other men who restrained him until police arrived and arrested him. The woman and the child both required hospital treatment for injury.
