David R. Langdon rescued Richard G. Salerno from burning, Westwood, Massachusetts, May 22, 1983. After a highway accident, Salerno, 20, was in the back-seat area of his car, which had burst into flames. Langdon, 18, high school student, opened the passenger door, and despite flames in the car’s interior, reached inside for Salerno. Attempting to pull Salerno out, Langdon fell; he stood and again reached inside for Salerno, who was aflame. Sustaining second- degree burns to both hands, Langdon pulled Salerno from the car. Others then extinguished the flames on Salerno, who was hospitalized for third-degree burns to 40 percent of his body. Langdon recovered from his burns.
