David S. Oliver, 22, clerk, attempted to save Daniel, 17, and Richard Pickett, 39, laborers, from suffocation, Georgetown, South Carolina, July 21, 1911. (See case of ASH BLANDEN.) Oliver saw Blanden taken from the vat and was told that his condition resulted from an attempt to save the Picketts. Oliver offered to go to the rescue. When it was suggested that he have a rope tied around him, he reluctantly waited while it was tied. A handkerchief was tied over his nostrils, and he descended the ladder. He stooped over one of the unconscious men and was then affected by the gas. He was pulled from the vat by means of the rope around him. He was unconscious and delirious when taken from the vat. He was revived. 8247-1173
