David Sangster, 60, stationary engineer, saved Robert D. Cuthbert, 46, carpenter, from drowning, Monticello, Indiana, June 15, 1928. Cuthbert lost control of an automobile that he was driving along the bank of Shafer Lake, and the automobile plunged over the bank into water 42 feet below. The automobile was submerged bottom up except for four inches of the front wheels. It was about eight feet from the bank, which was almost vertical. Sangster, who was fully clothed, jumped in darkness from the top of the bank, sliding part of the way and finally dropping 17 feet into water above his waist. By lowering himself under the surface at the side of the automobile, he opened a door with difficulty and pulled Cuthbert out. Cuthbert and Sangster were taken to the bank in a boat. Cuthbert was somewhat injured by the fall, but he recovered. 28390-2339
