David Stanley Wilhoyte, 17, schoolboy, died attempting to save Norman E. Risen, 18, schoolboy, from drowning, Jeffersontown, Kentucky, May 22, 1953. While Risen, David, and another youth were swimming together in Tucker’s Lake, Risen felt a sharp back pain and numbness in his legs. He groaned and flung both arms around the other youth’s neck, submerging him briefly in water 18 feet deep 20 feet from the bank. David swam four feet to them, arriving just as the youth drew up his legs and forcibly shoved Risen away from him. From behind Risen, David extended a hand and attempted to take bold of him. Risen turned suddenly and seized David, pulling him beneath the surface. The youth got hold of Risen but could lift only the top of his head above water. Releasing Risen, who sank from view, the youth returned to the bank. Risen and David were found inert on the bottom and were removed to the bank by lifeguards and others. Risen was revived. David was given artificial respiration but could not be revived. 42999-3954
