David W. Younce, 74, painter, rescued Chloe K., 24, and Nellie E. Webb, 1, from a runaway, Eaton, Indiana, April 12, 1915. Mrs. Webb and her child were in the bed of a loaded wagon when the horses became frightened and ran away, throwing the driver from the wagon. Younce ran and reached the horses as they ran along the gutter at full speed. He seized the bridle of the nearer horse and ran 60 feet with it, jerking and bearing down on the bridle. He then reached over and grasped the rein of the other horse, which was forging ahead. The horses were thus brought to a stop 85 feet from where Younce reached them. Younce seemed only slightly bruised, but four days later he suffered a paralytic stroke that partly disabled him. 15146-1239
