Dean A. Scott

Dean A. Scott died attempting to save a man from drowning, Canton, South Dakota, November 9, 1995. In a suicide attempt at night, a 33-year-old man jumped into the Big Sioux River from a concrete slab along the bank. Scott, 34, minister, who was at the scene to counsel the man, left items of attire on the bank, then entered the river to rescue him. Scott shortly submerged in the frigid water. The man was carried downstream to a point in wadable water from which he was removed by firefighters. Scott’s body was recovered from the river the next day; he had drowned.
