Dean E. Cooke, 17, student, saved Velma C. Hulder, 18, from drowning, Whitefish, Montana, November 30, 1924. While Miss Hulder was skating at night on the Whitefish River, the ice broke under her. Dean lay down on the ice and tried to pull her out, but the ice broke and he went into the water. Miss Hulder held him around the neck from the back, and he trod water a few feet and then supported himself with his arm on a plank at the edge of the ice. Repeated efforts were made to rescue Dean and Miss Hulder from planks laid on the ice, but the planks broke through, forming a channel to the hole. A rope was tossed to Dean, and because his hands were numb, he held it with his teeth. He and Miss Hulder then were drawn through the channel to the bank. Dean had been in the water 20 minutes and was unable to stand. 24920-2087
