Delbert B. Hartley, 31, railroad shopman, attempted to save Yvonne J. Erickson, 27, from drowning, Wilma, Washington, July 2, 1925. While Mrs. Erickson was swimming in the Snake River, she was caught in an eddy and was unable to make progress toward the bank. Hartley, who was a poor swimmer, swam a few feet to her and tried to push her toward the bank. He was pulled downward by an undercurrent and was unable to regain a swimming position. Another man, who was crippled, swam to Mrs. Erickson, gave her a shove to wadable water, and then swam to Hartley and rescued him. Hartley had swallowed much water but recovered.
