Delmar W. Oldaker, 23, automotive mechanic, died attempting to save Charles R. Miller, 35, pump-house operator, from suffocation, Point Pleasant, West Virginia, August 14, 1943. Miller was overcome by gas in the basement of a pump-house of a manufacturing plant and was seven feet from the foot of stairs that descended from the ground-floor. Sewage sludge covered the basement floor, and there was an odor of sewage. A man who discovered Miller called to Oldaker, who entered the building, descended the stairs, went to Miller, and pulled him five feet toward the stairs. He was overcome and fell across Miller. Two plant guards, wearing gas-masks, descended and took hold of Oldaker. One of the guards was overcome, and the other one went outside. The three unconscious men were removed from the building by other guards and firemen wearing masks, but none of the three could be revived. 39986-3343
