Demetrio C. Cardea died attempting to save Anna M. and Madeline Fabitore from drowning, Palmyra, New Jersey July 7, 1927. While Anna, 12, was wading in Pensauken Creek, she got into deep water 30 feet from the bank, and Madeline, 17, in attempting to aid her, also got into deep water. Fully clothed, Cardea, 41, factoryhand, waded from the bank and then swam 10 feet to Anna. He gave her a push toward the bank and then turned to face Madeline, who was a few feet from him. Madeline sank almost immediately and did not rise. Cardea then sank, rose almost to the surface, and sank again. Anna drifted a few feet and sank. All were drowned. 27407-2192
