Dennis G. Thomas saved Donna M. Thomas from drowning, Port Huron, Michigan, January 23, 1986. While attempting to cross the partially frozen Black River, Miss Thomas, 21, fell through thin ice into deep water near the river’s unfrozen channel and called for help. From a riverside restaurant, Thomas, 30, machinist, saw Miss Thomas and ran to the river. He crawled across the ice toward her, then lay on the ice and attempted to reach her. Thomas too fell through the ice. Although he was a poor swimmer, Thomas swam to Miss Thomas and tried to support her. She panicked and twice submerged him. Thomas surfaced and regained his breath as Miss Thomas calmed. Thomas then supported her until others arrived, threw them a rope, and pulled them to the bank. Miss Thomas was hospitalized for treatment, and Thomas was treated for a cut. 60957-7048
