Dennis James Felder saved Karl G. Douglas from burning, Queens, New York, January 4, 1990. Douglas, 28, was driving a dump truck on an expressway when the truck lost its left, rear, tandem-wheel assembly. Out of control, the truck overturned onto its passenger side, and flames erupted on thef ront of the truck. Working with a highway crew near the scene, Felder, 38,city debris remover, witnessed the accident and approached the truck. Despite spreading flames on the truck’s undercarriage and hood, Felder climbed up the exposed underside of the truck to the top of the cab. After some difficulty, he opened the driver’s door, then partially entered the cab and pulled Douglas out. They dropped to the highway and ran from the truck shortly before the cab was engulfed by flame.
