Domingo Solorzano helped attempt to save Joseph Rose from burning, Queens, New York, May 15, 1994. Rose, 46, was inside the cab of the gasoline tanker truck that he had been driving after the truck overturned on a highway interchange ramp. Gasoline from the truck’s 7,000-gallon load poured out of the tanker and onto the surrounding ground. Solorzano, 39, electrician, learned of the accident and responded to the scene from his nearby residence. He approached the overturned truck and joined other men in working to free Rose by manipulating wreckage that was trapping him. A massive explosion occurred at the truck, engulfing it in flames. Rose died. Solorzano and others attempting Rose’s rescue were burned, Solorzano requiring hospital treatment of burns to his face and arms.
