Don R. Kirkman, 28, salesman, died attempting to save Anne E. Burkheimer, 25, from drowning, Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, July 24, 1919. Miss Burkheimer let down in water over her depth in Banks Channel 50 feet from shore, lost control of herself, and called for help. Kirkman, who could not swim, removed his coat, ran 300 feet along the shore, and waded toward her. He plunged and made several strokes and got to a point 10 feet from Miss Burkheimer. He then drifted 120 feet and sank and was drowned. Two boys took Miss Burkheimer to shore, but she was dead.
