Don Rey Alonso saved Samir J. Foteh from burning, Houston, Texas, March 21, 1980. When the small airplane he was aboard crashed into a hangar following takeoff and burst into flames at William P. Hobby Airport, Foteh, 24, was injured but crawled to the rear passenger door and pushed it open. Alonso, 35, corporate pilot, ran to the burning aircraft and, despite 40-foot-high flames less than 10 feet away, reached inside and pulled Foteh out, dragging him clear of the wreckage. Foteh recovered from his injuries after a lengthy hospital stay but suffers permanent disability in his legs.
